Important Checklist Items for Hiring Heating Engineer and Plumber

There are many contractors providing heating system repairs and other such services but it doesn’t mean that they are properly qualified for the job. A referral from a family member or close friend isn’t enough reason to let the plumber or heating engineer perform any work in your home no matter how minor. There are a few important checklist items you first need to go through before giving the go-ahead for the job to begin.

Insurance

You need to make sure that you are protected from liability in the event the engineer or plumber is injured while performing his duties on your premises. In the same breath, you need assurance that you will be fully compensated if your property is damaged.

Check that the plumber is properly and fully insured and ask for details on what the insurance covers. Keep in mind that the insurance is voided in the event that the plumber is not qualified and certified to complete the specific task he is set to perform.

Gas Safety

Only a Gas Safe boiler engineer is legally allowed to work on your boiler. Anyone working on your pipe work or gas applies must also be Gas Safe licensed. Ask for Gas Safe ID and confirm that the picture matches the person presenting it.

Check the back of the ID to confirm which appliances he is qualified to work on including pipe work, gas fires, and gas boilers and so on. The ID also has a unique license number that you can crosscheck in case you are unsure or suspicious of the engineer's credentials.

Unvented Hot Water Certificate

Ensure that the engineer working on sealed heating or water systems (such as combi boilers) holds an Unvented Hot Water System certificate. Improper installation, repair and maintenance can cause an explosion so confirming this certification is necessary for your safety and that of your family. The same applies for anyone working on sealed heating systems.

Water Regulations Certification

Check that your plumber London has a valid Water Regulations certificate before he starts any work on your property. This requirement is necessary for anyone who intends to perform installation, design or maintenance of water-using appliances, water fittings and plumbing systems.

•    Risks of using a plumber without the necessary certification include;
•    Water misuse or wastage
•    Contaminated drinking water
•    Scalding during hot water use
•    Presence of legionella in stored water

There are many plumbers out there who are happy to perform boiler repairs, heating system repairs and other such repairs without the proper certification. Their services might be cheap and convenient but you could be putting your family at risk. Insist that your plumber or engineer has the necessary training and proper certification for the appliance or system he is working on.
